Composer and improviser Sam Shalabi has been a central node in Montreal’s free improv scene for many years, currently splitting his time between there and Cairo, Egypt. Beginning in punk rock in the late ‘70s, his work has evolved into an experimental fusion of modern arabic music that incorporates traditional elements, shaabi, classical, free improvisation, and jazz. He’s known for his work in countless groups, including Shalabi Effect, Land of Kush, Dwarfs of East Agouza, Molasses, and Po, as well as recordings and performances with a host of noteworthy collaborators including Evan Parker, Alan Bishop, Oren Ambarchi, and Will Guthrie. Shalabi has toured in Europe, North America, and North Africa, appearing on over 30 albums to date.
